Several conditions can leave you with an enlarged uterus. Thankfully, most are treatable, as long as you have the right diagnosis. And treatment is important since any changes to the size or shape of your uterus can lead to fertility concerns, including impacts on your ability to carry and deliver a full-term baby. So, what's causing changes to the shape of your uterus, and what can you do about it? Let's find out together!
An enlarged uterus could be the result of several different conditions, many of which have overlapping symptoms. Thankfully, subtle differences can help direct you to the right diagnosis.
If you have endometriosis, the tissue that lines your uterus will also develop elsewhere in your body. Symptoms include changes to the size of your uterus, especially during your period. Additionally, you may experience pelvic pain, heavy periods and fertility challenges.
Women with fibroids could see their uterus expand if they develop fibroids, muscular tumors that can form within the uterine cavity, the muscular uterine wall or outside the uterus, attaching to the organ via stalk-like growths. And, because they are so connected to the uterus, growing fibroids can enlarge the uterus as well.
Some women with endometrial cancer may experience uterine enlargement. As such, it's important to speak to your doctor right away if you notice any symptoms that indicate your uterus is changing sizes.
With uterine enlargement, you may experience abdominal bloating; heavy, long or painful periods; or the passing of large clots during your period. Other warning signs include pain in the back, lower abdomen, legs and pelvis. And, for many women with an enlarged uterus, sex will be painful and constipation and/or incontinence could become a concern.
Because there are so many causes of an enlarged uterus, it's important to seek treatment as soon as you notice symptoms of this condition. Any delays could directly impact your quality of life, as well as you treatment options.
