When You Need a Fibroid Fix, You Have Choices

Posted on July 15, 2024

July is Uterine Fibroids Aware Month, so this is the perfect time to let you know that there are different ways to find your best fibroid fix. And many of those options allow you to avoid surgery, including Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE). Now, not every woman will be a great UFE candidate; but many could benefit from this minimally invasive intervention. How will you know if UFE is a good treatment option for you? right for you? Check out our checklist below and read through the rest of this post for more info.

UFE candidacy checklist

Who is an Ideal UFE Candidate

While most women will develop at least one fibroid by the time they turn 50, as many as 57% don't think they should worry about these uterine tumors.

Even women who have fibroids (and fibroid symptoms such as heavy bleeding) are too embarrassed to discuss their discomfort, leaving 37% of women who have these tumors without a diagnosis. From there, the picture doesn't get much better. Data from the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) shows that 53% of women seeking fibroid treatment only learn about hysterectomies. And only 20% learn about less invasive treatments such as pain management, UFE or even the best birth control with fibroids.

To help make a change, SIR is revamping the #FibroidFix campaign so that more women become aware of treatment options that would allow them to preserve their uterus and avoid a hysterectomy.

In some cases, that may mean undergoing a myomectomy (the surgical removal of individual fibroids.) But UFE could be your ideal fibroid fix if:

• Your fibroids are symptomatic
• You want to keep your uterus and avoid surgery
• You aren't currently pregnant.
