What problems can a fibroid cause?

Fibroids are non-cancerous uterine tumors. Some women with fibroids experience symptoms such as heavy bleeding, pelvic pain and an enlarged uterus. Additionally, recent studies reveal that women with fibroids are more likely to develop other health conditions (comorbidities.) Here’s what you need to know.

What problems can a fibroid cause?

Direct fibroid symptoms include weight gain, pain with sex, menstrual cramps and more. Indirectly, having fibroids seems to increase women’s risk for developing other health conditions, according to this study. Specifically, researchers at Vanderbilt University examined the health records of close to 27,000 women who had been diagnosed with uterine fibroids. Next, they looked at other health conditions affecting these women. Finally, the study concluded that there are over 380 health conditions associated with fibroids. For the most part, they were linked to skin, circulatory and urinary health, with additional associations linked to the sensory organs. As such, the study authors concluded, “Overall, individuals with fibroids have a marked increase in comorbidities compared to those without fibroids.”

What other health issues can fibroids be linked to?

In addition to the concerns highlighted in this study, some women with fibroids develop anemia due to excess blood loss during long  or heavy menstrual periods, or bleeding between periods. Being anemic means your body lack sufficient red blood cells to bring oxygen to your body’s organs. It must be treated promptly to avoid further health concerns.
