Women with uterine fibroids can have long and heavy periods. But they could also have shorter cycles, leading to two periods in a one month time frame. As such, it can be hard to tell if you're spotting between periods or beginning to menstruate. To help determine the difference, this post will explain how to know if you're seeing spotting vs period blood.
When we talk about spotting, we're referring to light vaginal blood flow that occurs separately from a menstrual period. And we do mean “light;” when spotting, you won't need to use a tampon or maxi pad, because a panty liner will provide enough leak protection.
But what causes spotting? Many factors could contribute to this light flow of blood. Commonly, hormonal fluctuations, ovulation or even pregnancy implantation could be the cause.
Menstrual period blood is built up uterine lining that your body sheds if you don't conceive during your monthly cycle. Typically, a period lasts between seven and 10 days, with flow being heaviest in the initial days and gradually becoming lighter. But if you have fibroids? Then you may experience heavy bleeding at any point in your cycle. And your period may last longer, too, increasing your risk for anemia and taking a toll on your quality of life.
When you chart your menstrual cycle, taking note of any major changes in your cycle, it's easier to recognize any type of abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB), whether it's during your period or spotting between cycles. Then, if you do, it's important to discuss these changes with a doctor, as AUB could be the result of your birth control, hormonal imbalances, fibroids, endometriosis and more. When you're in the office, it will be easier to determine if you're seeing spotting vs period blood, and to discover if fibroids are the causes of changes to your cycle.
