Studies show that Black women who eat more dairy can lower their fibroid risk. And that's important, because they develop these uterine tumors more frequently than white women. At the same time, consuming full fat dairy as part of a fibroid diet could worsen your symptoms. So what should you do when you hit the supermarket dairy aisle? Here's what you need to know.
This Sloane Epidemiology Center study, using information from the larger Black Women’s Health Study, noted that the average Black woman consumes less dairy each day than the average white woman. (They also noted that this could be the result of increased rates of lactose intolerance in the African American community.)
Unfortunately, by avoiding dairy, Black women also limit their intake of calcium, phosphorous and magnesium consumption. And that could help explain why they develop fibroids so much more frequently than white women. As such, researchers concluded that increasing their fibroid diet's dairy intake to four daily servings could lower Black women's tumor risk by 30%.
Still, we don't want you to take this information and run out to your favorite ice cream parlor or cheese shop. You see, consuming full-fat dairy products like these could worsen your fibroid symptoms. Instead, try to consume better-for-you options such as low-fat yogurt and milk.
If you already have uterine fibroids, and you aren't finding relief with lifestyle measures like following a fibroid desk, it may be time to explore Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE treatment). This minimally invasive fibroid treatment shrinks your tumors by blocking their blood supply. It can provide symptom relief without the need for surgery or overnight hospital stays. And you can begin to explore your candidacy by requesting a consultation at the Dallas Fibroid Center.
