Stars like Porsha Williams and Deiondra Sanders like to share their experiences regarding pregnancy with fibroids. And we like to share what they say, to help you manage expectations. For Williams, she became pregnant after years of infertility and miscarriages caused by fibroids. However, during the pregnancy, she experienced “some pregnancy complications due to large fibroids. She was admitted to the hospital,” according to People magazine.
Later, Porsha was released and delivered a healthy baby, telling Bravo TV "In my second trimester…I had that one little scare, when I had to go to the hospital, but since then I haven’t had any issue with the fibroids."
That was not the case for Deiondra Sanders, (football star Deion Sanders' daughter) whose pregnancy with fibroids was more complicated. Prior to conceiving, she experienced multiple miscarriages and myomectomy surgeries. Once pregnant her cervix shortened, necessitating a cerclage procedure to protect her from pre-term labor. Ultimately, she also delivered a healthy baby. But their stories highlight some of the ways in which fibroids can complicate pregnancy and delivery.
Between 10 and 30 percent of pregnant women with fibroids experience complications including:
• Stomach pain
• Some vaginal bleeding
• Higher risk for premature delivery
• Abnormal position of the fetus
• Increased miscarriage risk
• Increased cesarean section risk
Ideally, you'd treat fibroids before trying to conceive. However, if you have fibroids during pregnancy, you will likely manage your symptoms with the least invasive options available. During your pregnancy, your doctor should carefully monitor fibroid growth to minimize the risk of complications. After your pregnancy is complete, if you want to explore minimally invasive uterine fibroid embolization (UFE treatment), you can request a consultation at the Dallas Fibroid Center.
