What are Fibroids?
Uterine fibroids, also called myomas or leiomyomas, are benign growths that can develop in the uterine walls, cavity, or muscles. Fibroids are often asymptomatic, not inherently dangerous, and don’t necessarily require medical intervention. However, when they become large or numerous, they can cause painful symptoms and even inhibit fertility. Common symptoms of fibroids include heavy bleeding, irregular menstruation, pelvic pain, and urinary incontinence.
- Uterine fibroids are very common among women who are over the age of 35.
- Women of African descent have greater risk factors for developing uterine fibroids than the general population – approximately 80% will develop fibroids in their lifetime.
- Symptoms can vary depending on the type of fibroid, the size of the fibroids, and the location of the fibroids.
Minimally Invasive Treatments for Uterine Fibroids
Surgical intervention isn’t the only – or necessarily the best – fibroid treatment. Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) offers numerous advantages over standard fibroid treatments.
Women who would like an effective solution for uterine fibroids that doesn’t involve undergoing a hysterectomy or any type of surgery should contact Dr. Luke Carlson for more information about UFE.
Dr. Carlson offers in-depth experience performing successful UFE procedures on a diverse population of women. If you struggle with uncomfortable symptoms that could be caused by uterine fibroids, please contact the helpful team at Dallas Fibroid Center today!
