Embolization of Fibroid Before Myomectomy

Many women with uterine fibroids experience disruptive symptoms that take a toll on their quality of life. That could mean heavy periods, an enlarged uterus, frequent urination and more. And, in order to find relief, they'll need to seek uterine fibroid treatments. However, because there are several treatment options, you will need to make a choice about which procedure to choose. And, sometimes, that can be difficult.

Do you really want to remove your uterus via hysterectomy? Or get rid of individual tumors surgically via myomectomy? Now, why would that be ideal? Well, a hysterectomy is a highly invasive surgery that puts you in menopause. Immediately. Of course, a myomectomy procedure is less invasive. But it's still a surgery with an intense recovery period and hospital stay.

The downsides of surgically treating fibroids leads many women to UFE. After all, it can shrink your fibroids and relieve your symptoms without an overnight hospital stay. Still, women with multiple fibroids or dangerously-sized tumors may not be good UFE candidates...at least, they weren't in the past. Yet, today, fibroid specialists are trying a new approach, offering embolization of fibroids before a myomectomy. Because, by combining these procedures, you could enjoy better myomectomy outcomes once you do go for surgery. And you could lose less blood in the process!

Even if you think surgery is your only viable fibroid treatment option, we encourage you to consider uterine artery embolization prior to a myomectomy. As we've discovered, having UFE before a myomectomy can reduce blood loss during surgery, while also improving general outcomes.
