Fibroid Embolization Vs. Fibroid Ablation

What’s The Difference Between Fibroid Embolization and Ablation?

The majority of women will be affected by fibroids at some point in their lives. Every woman experiences them differently due to their different sizes, locations, and severity.

Most cases of uterine fibroids develop during peak childbearing age — between the early 20s and mid-30s. The symptoms include irregular menstruation, heavy bleeding during periods, painful cycles (cramping), pelvic pain, low back pain, urinary frequency, anemia, and sometimes the appearance of weight gain due to an enlarged uterus.

Dallas Fibroid Center provides numerous treatment options for uterine fibroids that are extremely low-risk, minimally invasive, and require little downtime. Fibroid embolization and ablation are two highly effective procedures that are appropriate for a wide variety of patients. Post-treatment, patients experience significant pain reduction and more normalized menstrual cycles.

The following is a breakdown of two treatment options we offer at Dallas Fibroid Center.

What is Uterine Fibroid Embolization?

Most cases of symptomatic uterine fibroids can be effectively treated with Uterine Fibroids Embolization (UFE). The procedure involves the use of a fluoroscopic x-ray device that delivers embolic material, inhibiting blood flow to the tumors. The lack of blood shrinks them and ultimately causes them to dissolve.

UFE is a safe and effective process that achieves success rates of about 85%. This specialized treatment can be administered in the groin or wrist arteries.

In most cases, women experience substantial improvements in their symptoms and reductions in the size of their uterine fibroids.
